4s Create Bath Bombs in Chemistry!

Chemistry 4S

Our 4s had some chemistry fun on Christmas Jumper Day by making their own bath bombs!

They used citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to make their bath bombs, and added a few drops of food colouring, perfume and ethanol. The mixture was pressed into moulds of flowers, stars, hearts, and put them into a drying oven to set.

They learned that, when the bath bomb hits the water, the citric acid dissolves and reacts with the sodium bicarbonate. Carbon dioxide is released very quickly and that gives the fizz, the other products are sodium citrate and water, so this is a very large-scale neutralisation reaction.

Our girls were very excited with their chemistry creations, to give as a Christmas gift or to treat themselves this holiday!
