BRAINCANDO

4s students participated in a two-week workshop aimed at better understanding the importance of sleep, learning revision techniques, and dealing with exam stress.

In the first session, each student was given an individual workbook that encouraged them to think about their current sleep schedule, brainstorm with other students some strategies that they could use to help attain a better sleep schedule and more restful sleep, and begin to try different stress reducing techniques.

A week later, the entire year came together for a workshop, delivered by BrainCanDo associate Catherine Sadler, where the discussion was continued from the previous week and focus included learning different revision techniques and the use of the stress reducing techniques they were beginning to learn about.

After a look into what sleep actually is and the many benefits gained from getting a good night’s sleep, different revision techniques were discussed which ultimately led to the creation of a year 4 Revision Techniques and Encouraging Notes Jar. Each student was asked to write down a revision technique that they have used and that had worked for them on a slip of paper. They were then asked to write an encouraging note that could help motivate them or a peer to keep going during revision. After collecting close to 100 revision/encouragement notes, all of the slips of paper were put into a jar and are now located where the girls can go and take a slip anytime they need some revision motivation!

To finish off the workshop, the stress reducing techniques of deep breathing and imagery were explored with all students participating in a stress-busting activity.
