World Book Day 2021

English Charity

World Book Day took place on Monday 4 March, and although we couldn’t quite celebrate the day together in person this year, our students and the English Department went all out in this fun event for a great cause!

Our students were encouraged to take part in a Readathon in the lead up to World Book Day: a sponsored reading challenge in order to raise money for the charity, Read For Good. Read For Good is an important organisation which provides books for children in schools and hospitals, and pays for professional storytellers to visit children in hospital and bring exciting stories to life.

The girls spent the weeks before World Book Day devouring novels, short stories, poetry, newspapers, magazines and more in order to raise money for this meaningful cause.

A huge well done goes to Holly R (4) for reading the most books (a whopping 20 books!) and Chloe T (4) who raised the most money by an individual reader. In total, our students raised an amazing £717 for Read For Good, which will surely provide many memorable moments for young people through reading and storytelling.

The English Department also organise a ‘Shelfie’ competition, where students were encouraged to take a selfie with their bookshelf at home. Many wonderful entries were received, however there could only be one winner: Emma R (4) who showcased her 'actual bookshelf' alongside her 'trying to impress the English teacher bookshelf'. Well done Emma!

And the literary competitions did not end there! Our annual World Book Day short story competition took place once again, with an overwhelming amount of entries from our Lower School students of an excellent standard. The overall ‘short story champions’ were:

Natalie M (L4) – Teddy Bears Aren’t Perfect

Phoebe R (4) – The Kraken

Louisa J (U4) – A Gift of Hope

Congratulations girls! You can read the winning entries by clicking on the names and story titles above.
