Mamie joined Queen Anne’s from a local prep school in September 2021 and has settled in well to the busy life of a QAS girl.
Mamie is one of our flexi boarders in Michell, the junior boarding house and stays at school during the week and goes home to her family on the weekends. She describes boarding in Michell as “one big family” and says “Mr and Mrs Blunt (House parents) are so kind, we have so much fun, and I like that we can be with the older girls in the 4s (year 8) and Upper 4s (year 9). When we join, we get a ‘sister’ from the older years who helps us settle in.”
“When I joined, I was in a dorm with two other Lower 4s (year 7) boarders. Everyone can decorate their room how they want, I put up lights and photos to make it feel homely. In the evening we have lots of fun activities such as cookery, bread making, mocktail nights and film nights.”
Having so many supportive people around her when she joined helped Mamie settle into life at the school.
“I look forward to school on a Monday, because I get to see my friends and I like saying good morning to all the teachers. I settled in quite well, it was difficult to find my way round at first, but everyone was really understanding and I soon knew where I was going.”
“I like creative subjects, like music and drama but I also enjoy chemistry and history. Even though the days are long they are good because it means we have time to do our prep and time to go to clubs, but we do get shorter days on Wednesday and Fridays, so we do get the chance to relax.”
As a Music Scholar, Mamie spends a lot of her time in the music centre and is involved in the Sinfonia Orchestra and Concert Band. “Because I play both woodwind and string instruments, I am perform in both of these, but I also am in the choir. I really love performing in the bigger evening concerts, but I can also perform in the lunchtime concerts on a Friday which is more relaxed, and we usually perform something we are working on and get to listen to other students’ performances.”
“I love sports like lacrosse and cross country and go to the supervised fitness club in the gym with my friends. I also joined some dance clubs, I do paid ballet lessons where I’ll take exams and I go to contemporary dance club too.”
