Apprenticeships Week U5

Pastries and Apprenticeships

On Tuesday 6 February, students in Upper 5 were treated to pastries, juice and, some wonderful guest speakers to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week.

Ben Gale from 'Employment 4 Students' spoke to the year group about degree apprenticeships, how they work, how to apply and the employers that offer them. He highlighted the application process and the importance of reflecting on skills and uniqueness.

Degree apprenticeships are very competitive and are becoming a more popular alternative to the traditional route to university.

“According to government apprenticeship and trainee figures (October 2023) 41,340 apprentices started degree apprenticeships to Bachelors (Level 6) and Masters (Level 7) standards in England during 2022/23, an increase of over 9% on the previous year.” www.prospects.ac.uk

It is vital that our students can provide evidence of their skills and knowledge through their co-curricular activities, work experience and volunteering to help set them apart from other future candidates.

Yana Punj from KPMG is a 2nd year Audit apprentice studying a 5-year Level 7 degree apprenticeship (Masters). She shared her experience of researching vacancies, the application process and what her role involves.

Students were able to hear the personal experiences of both Yana and Ben as they chose different routes of study.

Showing students their options and allowing them to engage with people who have recently been in their shoes, helps them to make an informed choice about their own future.
