Queen Anne's Sports News - 13th May 2019

A round-up of all the latest sports news in the week commencing Monday 13 May 2019.

Tamara Taylor

Congratulations to Queen Anne’s alumna and rugby superstar Tamara Taylor, for breaking the world record for the highest game of rugby played – on Mount Everest!

Tamara Taylor was part of the England Women’s rugby team for 14 years, accumulating 115 caps for her country and is one of only three women in elite level sport to have made over 100 appearances for her country.

She came in to speak to the girls about Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby which funds life changing projects for children with disabilities or facing disadvantage. Queen Anne’s School held a MUFTI day to support Tamara’s Everest challenge and the charity.

Tamara’s most recent fund raising activity for Wooden Spoon was completed recently. She completed a double world record attempt on Everest, aspiring to play the highest game of touch rugby at Everest base camp and then the highest game of full contact rugby in history, at 6,331m, well above the height of the advanced camp.

Easter Row Camp  

Over Easter, 10 Queen Anne’s girls, ranging from L5-U6, travelled to Spain for their Easter row training camp. The girls trained two (even three) sessions every day whilst working on their technique and building the speed of the boat, to prepare for the upcoming summer racing season.

The weather conditions varied over the course of their training, with some gorgeous sunny spells, but also facing challenging weather conditions on occasions, with rain making a daily appearance, even thunder and lightning on one afternoon.

The girls were lucky enough to meet the Swiss world class sculler Jeannine Gmelin, training at the same camp as them.

Milly's Lacrosse Success

Milly B  received some exciting news at the end of the Easter holidays. Milly is only in the U4s, but she has been invited to attend the England U19 National Academy trials, which is something really quite incredible given her current age.

The National Academy offers a direct route into the England National Team setup, with players from the National Academy forming the England Under 19 National squad.

Berkshire County Combined Championships   

Four versatile Queen Anne’s athletes competed in the challenging Berkshire County Combined Championships, where athletes compete in one day in hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m.

Poppy Winters placed in the top 4 and as a result has now been selected to compete for Berkshire in the South East Regional Combined Events Championships.

Southern Regional National Grades Level 2 Competition      

Alice B (4) competed in the Southern Region National Grades level two competition in Southampton.

She had a great competition, placing first for vault and floor, second for beam and fourth on the the bares. As a result Alice is now the Southern Region AA champion: AA stands for All Around.

She will now go on to represent represent the South of England at the Nationals in Stoke on Trent.

Tennis

In the last two weeks our girls have played 7 Aegon tennis matches. We have three teams entered into Aegon Schools Tennis Championships, so often our B teams are playing A teams or girls are playing the year above.

On Saturday, there were 8 tennis matches against Bradfield in a friendly fixture.

Overall we won 3, drew 1 and lost 4.

Athletics

ATHLETICS V ST GEORGE’S, ASCOT
On Saturday we also had U12, U13 and a joint U14/U15 team competing against St George’s in a home athletics fixture.

For many of our U12s this was their first competition, and what was so nice to see was that even taking out girls who had competed the day before at Foundation Sports day or were in the dance show, we were still able to field competitors at all age categories for every event.

As a result we won all three age groups.

• U12 Team: Won 37-31
• U13 Team: Won 36-32
• U14/U15 Team: Won 41-24

Foundation Sports Day

The junior and inter athletics teams travelled to Sutton Valence School in Kent for the 50th anniversary of the United Westminster and Grey Coat Hospital Foundation Sports Day.

There were some amazing performances with Libby R (L4) just missing the 800m record by 0.32 of a second with a time of 2 minutes 34.57 seconds.

Katie L (4) broke the junior girls high jump record, held by a previous Queen Anne’s athlete since 2001, with a jump of 1m44cm.
Ella B (4) broke the junior girls 1500m record with a time of 5 minutes 3 seconds.

Critically, our athletes consistently placed in the top three in nearly every event, which meant that both teams won overall and we were able to return with the Millenium Cup for the 15th year running!
