A round-up of all the latest sports news in the week commencing Monday 3 June 2019.

Cricket

The week before half term saw a flurry of Queen Anne’s cricket fixtures!

There was a mixed year group team against The Abbey, based on girls who have been able to attend the Monday club session.

The groundsmen mowed us a cricket strip and it was really lovely to see the girls show their bowling, batting and fielding skills. Holly W (U4) led by example and captained the team excellently.

Well done to the team: Melissa Z (L4), Francesca W (L4), Lucinda F (L4), Ella B (4), Heidi F (U4), Annabelle F (U4), Holly W (U4), Ruth T (U4).

An U14 team competed against Leighton Park. They won the match by 39 runs.

Well done to the team: Heidi F (U4), Annabelle F (U4), Ruth T (U4), Holly W (U4), Annie A (U4), Lucy B (U4), Paris M (U4), Claudia M (U4), Hannah P (U4)

Best fielder: Claudia M (U4)
Best Batter: Holly W (U4)

Tennis

There were six tennis matches in the week leading up to half term with Queen Anne’s playing The Abbey, Wellington College and Leighton Park.

Here are the results against The Abbey. You’ll notice that we are sometimes playing teams of a different age category, this is due to the luck of the draw in the Aegon Cup.

Player of the match: Sophie B (L5)

Queen Anne’s students have seen a lot of Dorney Lake in Eton over the last week!

Triathlon at Eton Sprints Weekend

Grace W (L5) competed in a triathlon as part of the Eton Sprints weekend. Hers was a sprint event involving a 750m swim, 21.2km ride and 5km run. The water temp was apparently over 16˚c, but it didn’t feel like it! She was the youngest competitor there and the only female U19 athlete. She completed it in a very respectable 1 hour 48 minutes.

Rowing

A number of our Queen Anne’s Boat Club entered the National Schools’ Regatta at Dorney Lake. The Regatta has over 5000 competitors racing over three days.

First up were the J15s rowing quad on the final Friday of last half term. The J15s were in a large category with 68 entrants and placed a satisfying 33rd.

Well done to our J15 Coxed Quad:
Amelie C (L5), Blair F (L5), Dora D (L5), Lucy B (L5), Rose B (L5)

The following day saw the J18 double in action. The wind started to pick up and competition was fierce in their category, but the girls put in a great performance to finish in the middle of 50 crews.

Well done to Rachel G (U6) and Sophie H (U6).

The day after was the turn of the two J18 quads, who faced tricky conditions with gusty cross winds. Again both crews raced well and it was a great way for some of them to end three years of rowing with Queen Anne’s.

Well done to the J18 Quads: Miya M (U6), Pippa M (U6), Alicia B (U6), Charlotte W (U6), Rachel G (U6), Amy H (L6), Kerrie F (L6), Sophie H (U6)

Artic One Challenge Training Day

Meanwhile, several intrepid girls took part in a triathlon training session at Queen Anne’s, practising the skills needed for open water swimming and the transitions on and off of the bike and into the run phase.

A big thank you to Mr Dax who took the training session and made the girls feel more prepared for the competition to come.

Artic One Tri and Para-Tri Festival

The girls then competed in the Go Tri Super Duper on the bank holiday Monday, also at Dorney Lake as part of the Arctic One Tri and Para-Tri Festival. This involved a 200m swim, 5km cycle and 1.5km run.

The lake was chillier than perhaps everyone expected and the cycling was challenging as it was very windy, but they all completed the course successfully and had a fabulous day!

Congratulations to our Queen Anne’s team who all successfully completed the course: Bella M (L4), Molly S (L5), Libby R (L4), Ella B (4), Katie W (4), Grace W (L5), Gigi J (U4), Emily R (U4). And thank you to our staff members who joined them!

Athletics

Ella B’s (4) time in the 1500m continues to drop after a week where she set a new personal best twice!

First at the ESAA Track and Field Cup competition and then again whilst competing for Reading Athletics Club in the Youth Development League.

With a fantastic sprint finish she finished second in the 1500m ‘A’ race. Her new personal best now stands at 4 minutes 52.53 seconds and places her 12th in the UK in the U15 age category.
