Sixth Form Build Schools and Friendships in Uganda

On Thursday 11 July, eleven Sixth Form students from Queen Anne’s School, alongside two students from Westminster City School, joined Miss Marsh, Dr Beale and Mr Stephenson on an exciting expedition to Uganda.

Upon their arrival, they started learning more about animal protection by visiting a chimpanzee sanctuary and a rhinoceros orphanage.

They then moved up to Masinidi for a week of working alongside RedEarth Education and supported their primary schools by helping to paint classrooms and work alongside the children.

They were all blown away by how the whole community in Masinidi welcomed their arrival and supported the efforts of the students. This was also an excellent opportunity for the students to gain a deeper insight into how an NGO functions.

Following from their time in the schools, our students were treated to a visit of Murchison Falls National Park where they saw hippopotamus, giraffe, elephants and crocodiles up close. They also learnt more about rainforest conservation and explored a mango farm.

The two-week trip ended in Kampala, the capital, where the students gained more knowledge about Ugandan history, culture and even got to take part in a dance show!

Mr Stephenson said of the trip “The girls really did Queen Anne’s proud; their attitude, behaviour and timekeeping was excellent and I know that RedEarth Education and the schools we worked with were extremely impressed by the positivity and maturity demonstrated.”

The two weeks in Uganda shaped so many unforgettable memories and experiences that probably did also change how I view some things in life. The mix between the volunteering and experiencing the country as well as the culture was perfect. One thing that was most impressive to me is how happy the people are; everyone was welcoming and so warm-hearted.
