The Gordon Brown Centre Day Out

On Thursday 12 September, the 4s visited the Gordon Brown Centre for a day of outdoor activities. The day started with ‘laser tag’, where the students were divided into two teams and had to use their laser guns in battles which tested their aim, strategic planning, and team co-operation skills. Then there was wall climbing and the so-called ‘death drop’ where the students scaled a near-vertical climbing wall, then climbed up to a suspended platform 20 feet off the ground and leapt off with only a single safety rope to break their fall. Every single student had the courage to do this - mot impressive. The day also featured ‘bush crafts’, including building a den that could withstand rainfall (or at least a teacher with a water pistol!).

There was also fire building, which involved exploring different ways to start a fire in the wild from flint and steel, through to 9-volt batteries and wire wool. Once the fires were ablaze, each group made popcorn on the flames before sitting around their respective fires to enjoy eating the fruit of their labours.

All in all, it was a fun-filled day of team-work, confidence building, developing of survival skills, and general support and encouragement for each other.
