Cultural Awareness Week gave QAS students the chance to learn about other cultures via a series of events, organised by the EDI society.

The week before Cultural Awareness Week students could take part in cookery sessions after school, during which they made delicious foods from around the world. This was a brilliant opportunity and allowed the students to immerse themselves in other cultures and make some tasty food to enjoy with friends.

They made:

  • Kimchi - a traditional Korean side dish of salted and fermented vegetables
  • Pelmeni - a traditional Russian meat dumpling made with ground meat and minced onion
  • Sagu Ros - a Malaysian rose flavoured 'cake' made from sago and rolled in desiccated coconut
  • Chicken Wings - popular across Asia, these chicken wings are coated in a ginger, garlic and soy sauce glaze
  • Chin-Chin - a popular Nigerian snack made from a dough which is then fried

Over the course of Cultural Week students ran a 'What is EDI?' session and an 'EDI Fair', during which there were several stations set up that students could visit and speak with students about mindfulness, religion along with students from the Gay-Straight Alliance, Asian Students Association, EDI Society, and Afro Caribbean Society.

Staff and students were  treated to a special menu throughout Cultural Awareness Week with foods from France, Korea and Spain on offer at lunchtime!

QAS also had an 'express yourself' day where students could dress in their own clothes and were encouraged to wear items of clothing to express their own cultural background. Some of the students then took part in a high energy 'Express Yourself Fashion Show',  before walking down the catwalk students were introduced along with the country they were representing, we had students representing countries from across the globe! From Wales, Scotland and Greece to India, South Africa and Nigeria.
