This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A group of our girls took the initiative to organise a ‘Wear It Pink’ fundraising day, in support of the charity Breast Cancer Now.

They were inspired by an assembly about breast cancer, presented by Queen Anne’s school nurse, Sister Botterill.

Sister Botterill has spent 17 years working in the the Royal Marsden Hospital with breast cancer patients, and in breast cancer diagnosis units. She even played a major part in putting instructions on how to check for breast cancer into the labels of over 1 million bras.

Over the past few weeks, Sister Botterill has been sharing her knowledge with our year groups through important assemblies and wellbeing lessons.

U5 students Rachael, Caitlin, Florence, Grace, Erin, Pasha and Natasha organised and ran the whole fundraiser event, encouraging the whole school to get involved and support such an important cause.

“This cause is one that is very close to our hearts” the girls said. “We thought that we could do more than just wear pink for a day, and that we could make an effort to raise as much money as possible.”

“As Queen Anne’s is an all girls school, the issue of breast cancer is one of even more importance, and raising awareness amongst the students, as well as raising money for Breast Cancer Now!, was also really important to us.”

On the evening of Thursday 17 October, our boarders helped Sister Botterill make pink ribbons for the entire school to wear.

Making Pink RibbonsThe girls also spent the evening baking some tasty pink tinged cakes ready for the cake sale at breaktime the next day.

Making Cakes‘Wear It Pink’ day was a huge success on Friday 18 October at Queen Anne’s. Staff showed up in their brightest pink outfits, girls dorned their favourite pink accessories, and everyone was encouraged to donate what they could to support Breast Cancer Now.

Pink Outfits and Cake SalesOver £450 was raised and Sister Botterill and our fabulous team of U5s are hugely grateful for all the support she has received to help raise awareness amongst the girls!
