The geography department were extremely impressed by the quality of this year’s entries into Young Geographer of the Year (YGOTY) competition.

All of the students’ entries showed great independence and some really challenging geographical topics were investigated including agriculture, wildfires, plastics in the ocean, big cat and red kite conservation, and deforestation among others.

Ten of our students' entries have been selected to enter this year's competition. These entries had detailed geographical analysis of the reasons for, and impacts of, geographical change. These students also showed how, through the geography outside of their window, they are linked to people and places around the world.

Amelia S (L4) explored the impacts of deforestation and air pollution around the world.

Emily B (L4) completed research into the topics of carbon footprints, pollution, food miles, and flooding.

Inspired by the vegetable patch in her garden, Caitlin M (L4) chose the topics of food miles and fair trade for her entry.

Jemima L (L4) researched intensive farming, and habitats of, and threats to big cats (inspired by her own cat Phoebe!).

Emily K (L4) based her research on buildings, suburbanisation and urban sprawl.

Inspired by the countryside view from her window, Phoebe R (L4) chose to research agriculture and red kites.

Hannah S (4) based her project on plastic pollution and wildfires, inspired by the pond and fire pit in her own garden.

Melissa Z (4) chose to explore deforestation and the environmental impact of buying a car.

U5 students Holly B and Rachel F went above and beyond for their KS5 entries by learning how to use ESRI StoryMaps to present their projects digitally!

Holly B chose to research the question "How do Human and Physical Factors Affect Rainforest Biomes?"

Rachel F chose to explore "How has the coronavirus pandemic impacted the UAE?"

Well done to all of our amazing young geographers, and good luck in the rest of this year's Young Geographer of the Year competition!

YGOTY is part of the super-curricular opportunities offered by the geography department, which includes, essay competitions, the worldwise quiz, visiting university geographers, lectures, and conferences.

Through taking part in these stretch and challenge activities, geography students are extremely well placed for success during their seven year geography journey at Queen Anne's School.
