L6 Lecture Series #1: Done is better than perfect

Sixth Form L6

The Sixth Form lecture series is a brilliant opportunity for our Lower 6 to hear from QAS academic staff and external guests.

Various topics are covered in the series via lectures on a weekly basis. The informative lectures aim to inspire the girls as they hear about personal and professional interests of the speaker, the lectures are thought provoking and leave the girls with a sense of curiosity on the topic.

Lower 6 student Emily gave her perspective on the first lecture of the series.

"During the first lecture of the series, Mrs Kay-Barrero gave us a heartfelt and comforting message – one that we tend to forget most of the time: ‘done is better than perfect’. I think many of us would find this counter-intuitive initially, since we seem to be told to do our best all the time. We have learnt to put pressure on ourselves and perfectionism is an easy trait to adopt in a school (or any) environment. Mrs Kay-Barrero shared with us her personal experience with perfectionism, and how it affected her when she was our age, as well as how she overcame this.

This lecture helped us to acknowledge that as our workload increases, which it will with starting sixth form, we should focus on getting our work done in time, rather than striving for the impossible perfection and finishing late. If we can just cover everything necessary, we are making the most of or time. The general feedback for students was that we all came away feeling a little more relaxed and prepared about our upcoming two years, as we will now remember that to truly succeed in our studies and other endeavours, we must be patient with ourselves – we do not need to be perfect!"
