Across the extensive sports facilities, you will find an ethos of excellence and inclusion where physical activity is promoted as essential for well-being and development. Via the extensive co-curricular programme, students can play a range of indoor and outdoor sports both recreationally and competitively, alongside their timetabled PE lessons.
Many students come to Queen Anne’s, often starting some sports for the first time, however, it doesn’t take long for students to develop a passion for PE and competitive sports. Dedicated and specialised PE teachers inspire students to reach their potential, with many students representing the school, the county or even their country, throughout their time at Queen Anne’s.
The number of students picking up a tennis racket is on the up, with many finding a love for the game. Teams of varying levels are available for all year groups to join, with the aim of encouraging as many students as possible to get involved in the sport. There are many recreational players at the school with around a hundred students taking part in weekly private tennis lessons with specialised coaches. Tennis is part of the summer PE curriculum and there are mid-week and Saturday matches during the summer term, allowing students to competitively play against other schools.
At performance level, the school does exceptionally well. The Junior U13 and U15 regularly make the county final of the Youth Schools competition and in 2019, the U13 team won the national final, beating around 200 schools. This year, the U13 team made the county semi-final and the U15 team are through to the county final which will take place during the first term of 2022/23.
For the Senior teams, they compete in both the Aberdare Cup and Senior Students’ competition, which in 2019 the team reached the national final and ranked 8th in the country.
Queen Anne’s was delighted to be announced as runner-up for the prestigious LTA School of the year award in 2020. This was a huge achievement for the school and a testament to the excellent tennis provision.
Top tennis players are coached by LTA performance coaches within the school’s performance academy. Sessions are held each week, all year round, with termly tournaments held where the students’ progress and competitive match play is assessed.
A tennis tour is also available for students interested in the sport, with the most recent one to Barcelona. The tour is a particular highlight for the students as they are able to play plenty of tennis, whilst enjoying the sights of the chosen destination.
Queen Anne’s has excellent tennis facilities with thirteen outdoor courts that were resurfaced and floodlit in the 2022 summer break as part of a 2.7-million-pound sports development project at the school. The next phase of development involves three of the courts being covered with a dome, meaning tennis training can take place in all weathers.
