L6 Lecture: Rwandan Genocide

L6 History

Lower 6 student, Cate organised a lecture for her peers on the Rwandan Genocide of 1994.

"I organised the lecture to raise awareness around the genocide and the health implications that women faced because of it. This talk is part of the Next Steps that I must complete for my Lessons from Auschwitz project, where I have to spread information around different genocides." - Cate

Cate organised for Liliane, a survivor of the genocide to speak with the year group on her story and the work she currently does. Her Father was tragically killed in the genocide, leading to Liliane and her Mother fleeing to England.

Currently, Liliane is the Foundation Rwanda Project Officer at Survivors Fund (SURF) and she organised a Women Genocide Survivors Retreat in 2017 and in 2018. This retreat, for 50 female survivors looked at helping the women who suffer with HIV/AIDS as a result of the sexual violence they faced during the genocide and those who also raised children conceived from the violence against them.

"Before the event, I presented some slides around the basic facts of the genocide so that my year group could have some background knowledge (it is attached to this email). Since this lecture, I have stayed in touch with Liliane and we are making sure that this talk can be part of the lecture series for every year to come." - Cate
